The day before we went to Gettysburg. It was a whole different feeling of emotion going to such a current Memorial. Very moving indeed. It brought me to tears to see the faces and to hear their recorded phone messages to their family members. It is very sad that they gave their lives. I am proud of their bravery that they displayed in their final moments.
The Visitor Center and Museum was only erected in 2015 and the new Tower of Voices went up last year. They started with a small building and the Memorial Plaza that was down near the crash site. The Visitor Center definitely tied the whole story together.
I will explain as I put pictures on here.
Memorial Plaza
Visitor Center and the rest of
Memorial plaza
(It ties together better this way)
Going down that final path that Flight 93 took, there are the reminders of when the other flights met their mark
At the end of the path, which is up on a hill, you look down at the crash site. The site is marked by a large sandstone rock at the end of the greenest grass path
A path is provided for you to walk down. This is looking back up the hill as we are descending down that path. The black path that was previously shown,
ends where the black deck is seen.
The marbel panels below have all the names of the 40 victims of Flight 93.
The black path of the plane took is continued down on the ground. In the background, you can see the Visitor Center at the top of the hill with the black deck standing out.
This is at ground level. The black path continues to the grass with the large rock in the distance. As you walk around the Memorial Plaza, you see the rock at different distances away. Once again, the rock marks the crater
where the plane stopped. Below you will find pictures of and from the Plaza.
Then they have put together a free Museum inside the Visitor Center.
These are some of the actual pieces of the plane that were found. The largest piece that was left was a portion of one of the wings, that measured 6' by 18" or so.
The crater was 15 feet deep
A diarama of the crash site. The Hemlock trees were burned and blown over.
I think this amazed me the most.
These are actual personal items of those on Flight 93. They were able to confirm that
Al Qaeda was behind the hijacking because they found a credit card with one of the
Hijackers name on it.
Parts of the plane
Badges of the Flight crew
The Red Cross gave every family a vial of the dirt from the crash site.
Below you will find what people have left at the Memorial.
This is the item that made me finally come to tears. Military boots were left by a member of our Military after he had got back from serving our Country in Afghanistan.
This is a look at the Memorials that have so quickly been built in New York, Washington DC and Shanksville.
The Names of All those who lost their lives on 9/11/2001
They just built the Tower of Voices. It is still in a testing phase. They will have 40 different chimes that are wind controlled when it is finished. It is supposed to represent the voices of the 40 victims that were on Flight 93
